Testimonies of Participants

Act local, Act in solidarity, to minimize inequalities, to open up pathways for mutual understanding, compassion, acceptance, openness, and unity”

“To be honest, I had never heard of the Europe for Citizens programme. Actually, I never knew that Europe has such programmes where citizens can participate and meet each other, speak about our common concerns and try to find solutions together. I feel so excited having taken part in CI.SO.MO. training in Siatista and in Novo Mesto. You know, that we, citizens of Siatista, are somehow isolated from the mainland and sometimes I get the feeling that information does not reach our city”

Tania Katotikidou, participant from Siatista, Greece

“When the migration crisis burst in Greece in 2015, I felt so depressed watching in the news the struggles of those poor people, being forced to leave their homes, their lives, their beloved ones behind. I felt that I had to help them, but I couldn’t figure out where to start. I knew that I had to show them my solidarity with their efforts for a better life because my grandparents were migrants too and came to Thessaloniki from Asia Minor. I started supporting solidarity movements in my community by sending food, clothes, and any other utility. I decided that I needed to take part in CI.SO.MO. activities to connect with my peers and make EU a union of solidarity, not just a Union of nations, but a Union of loving people who support each other, who support any human being”.

Sofia Chotomanidou, participant from Thessaloniki, Greece

“I currently live in Sweden, a country with so many migrant people, that has a very well-structured supporting system for them. And I was wondering how come this country is so advanced in comparison to any other EU member-state. And I came to the conclusion that it’s not only the government’s policies, it’s also about educating people to accept the “others”. The reason I am here, taking part in CI.SO.MO. round table in Novo mesto, is to discuss with my fellow EU citizens how we can act together in solidarity for a better common future. Europe is not a stagnated institution, it’s always on the move, always changing, and as such has to be open and inclusive”.

Mason Adam, participant from Stockholm, Sweden

“When a friend of mine told me about the project, I thought that this is a good opportunity to see what other people think about migrants. You know, my mother is a migrant, and everybody was always referring to me as the child of the “foreigner” as if my mother didn’t have a name of her own. I was surprised that even today people are hostile towards migrants but I was also happily surprised that a load of people is working to help these people, to support them, to build a network of protection around them. This is solidarity, and I want to be part of the civil society solidarity movement”.

Dani Matev, participant from Varna, Bulgaria

“In the beginning, I came to the training, thinking that it will be just another EU funded project. But I was wrong. I met people from other countries who have the same concerns as I do, and I met people who have made their life target to support and help people in need, I learned what real solidarity is, how I can help my fellow citizens, and how to be an open-minded person. I think this experience made me a better person”.
